About 40% of the population of the USA has struggles with weight issues.  As a result, over 450,000+ deaths occur annually, and over 1 million more have medical conditions that are directly related to being overweight.  When someone’s body stores more fat than is needed and poses a significant risk to their health, then they are referred to as obese.  Too much money is spent on unnecessary medical costs as a result of being overweight.

Why are so many people overweight now?  Well, there are a variety of reasons.  Too many of us live a lifestyle in which regular physical activity or exercise is completely absent.  Whenever we need to go somewhere nearby, many of us will simply drive, rather than walk.  Driving deprives our bodies the exercise it needs in order to burn off excess calories.

Contributing also to this fact is the ever-increasing popularity of fast food chains and buffets which can be found more and more.  These types of eateries were founded on the idea that people do not believe that they have the time to cook their own meals at home, therefore, they will make a profit.  This premise, unfortunately, has proven true – no matter the state of the economy, fast food is always reporting steady business.

There are some individuals who have issues with heredity that cause them to be overweight.  These defects in their genes cause them to store more fat in their bodies than is needed, and if these people maintain the same bad eating habits as everyone else, then major health risks can be a reality.

However, in 2010, you can put your weight gain in the past simply by adopting new steps to take care of yourself and developing the proper mindset.  If you really want to lose weight in 2010, then one of the first things you need to do is educate yourself on nutrition, how to shop for groceries, and exercise routines.  It is important also for you to determine why you are currently overweight.  What kind of foods do you eat? What is the caloric content?  Mypyramid.gov is a great website, run by the USFDA, that can educate you on all of these questions and more.

Another helpful hint to help you lose weight in 2010 is to increase the amount of exercise you do.  Many gyms and fitness centers offer attractive discounts and personal fitness coaches.  Sometimes, there are such facilities in apartment buildings which are usually free of charge.  Use these facilities daily and you will see a noticeable change in your weight.  You may have scheduling issues which do not all you to go to the gym, or there may be no gym in your apartment building.  That is OK.  You can just as easily start off committing to walk ½ a mile per day.

Exercises can also be done in your home, such as sit-ups and/or push ups. Before you attempt to adopt an exercise plan, check with your physician, because depending on your weight, some exercises may be better for you than others.

    You can lose weight quickly just by eliminating drinks from your diet that contain calories. Switch to water, seltzer, or diet drinks. That alone could save 100’s of calories. If you don’t want to exercise, you could try just walking and stretching daily, just to get your body moving. Any movement will burn calories which will help weight loss.
