Is Losing Weight your Holiday resolution?

A lot of people will answer a resounding “yes” when they are asked this question and they are just hoping there are some simple weight loss secrets.  This is mainly because research has shown that gaining weight is an issue that haunts nearly 40% of the American population.  Plus, it kills approximately 500,000+ people each year in the USA alone.  There is also a loss in economical productivity which adds up to millions – maybe even billions – of dollars, all of which are because of being overweight.  So complex or simple weight loss secrets just might help us all.

Obesity is a term used in the medical field that denotes that the body has stored more fat than it needs and has become a health risk as a result.  To measure obesity, doctors use the body mass index – or BMI – which is a calculation based on your height in relation to your weight.  If you have a BMI of 25 or more, then you are said to be overweight.  Too many people can admit that they are well over a BMI of 25 since the last holiday season has passed.

There is a wide variety of ways that you can gain weight, and chances are, you can relate with some of them.  One reason people gain weight is because they partake in high calorie diets and not exercise nearly enough.  In many cases for a lot of people, fast food products are the main culprit.  Fast food is not about to disappear anytime soon, and in the Western world, it is extremely popular.  This is primarily because the majority of people do not believe they have time to cook, buy groceries, or exercise due to the social pressures of a fast paced life.  While it is true that most fast food restaurants have promised a reduction in the amount of trans-fats they utilize to prepare their products, this does not reduce the high calorie content present in them.

But, fast foods are not the only culprit.  Sometimes, basic meals prepared at home which are high in calories also contribute to weight gain.  Many people tend to snack a lot on junk food, and then plop themselves in front the TV set – therefore, there is no exercising being done to burn off the high calorie content.  This has come to be the main cause of obesity among younger people.  People who buy food products and do not check the caloric content can also lead to obesity.  There are also those who have a natural tendency to be overweight due to genetic and or hereditary issues.  If these people indulge themselves in the bad eating habits mentioned above, then they are at a higher risk of becoming obese.
